Using those Scrap Cuts!

We all have them; lots of them….don't we?? Well at least I do.  Lots of "extra cuts" from paper that I cut on my cricut machine of projects that were never completed, images cut too big or too small, or I "changed my mind" cuts.
So I have a big ole drawer that I throw all of those cuts into to use "later"….maybe….  or to keep things straight…. if it's a project with a specific theme I will use plastic ziploc bags to keep matching pieces together for a later date.  I then put the bags in the drawer, write on them with a black marker what they are, cartridge, size, etc.

Now….onto today's project….last week, one of Spencer's school projects included a homework assignment to "Disguise Tom Turkey so he doesn't get picked for Thanksgiving Dinner" --  some examples included a dog, cat, sheep, barbie, super hero…. let your imagination sore……so the first thing I did was go to my "extra scrap cuts" drawer and let Spencer pick out a few "extra" cuts to "disquise" his paper turkey.  Now….let's get started…..it should be no surprise though -- he picked all cowboy cuts…. and these were left over from some of his birthday party invitations from several years ago.  Plain paper turkey was going to become "Cowboy Tom" by adding boots, pants, chaps, shirt, bandana, hat and some jute rope -- hoping not to get picked for Thanksgiving dinner.  YEE HAW!
He colored all of the feathers and mom added a few doodles to complete his project.

So fun!

Just an idea that those extra cuts can come in handy when we least expect it.

I am actually showing you an altered, recycled, trash to treasure, "whatever you want to call it" item.

I started with 2 empty cricut cartridge boxes and made them look like books.  Cool, huh?  This would be a great idea for a teacher, classroom, desk, office, etc.  I hope you like it as much as I do.

{VIDEO} ~ Here's a video with close ups for you….click here if you are unable to view it below.

How to Make a George Washington Wig

Being the "crafty" one in the family sometimes has it perks and sometimes not.  When my nephew asked me to help him "look" like George Washington for a school program -- I didn't really know where to begin.  SO I "googled" it of course....LOL This is where I stand "true" to my name CRAFT JUNKIE TOO (plural) I do a little of everything!  I am posting this in hopes it may help someone else in the future.

I started with a white Durag like this one.  It's very stable and I knew I could tie the strings around his head as tightly as needed.

Then I hot glued TONS of white cotton balls all over the Durag -- this takes a bit of time because it needs LOTS of cotton balls.  I used a butter cup for a "make shift" mannequin head -- works great!

To add the "gray" to George's hair I dabbed gray paint all over...here and there.  I used a paintbrush to do the dabbing.

Then I used some curly ribbon bows (like you put on gifts) for George's pony tail.  I took out the silver ribbon and it was perfect.  I added this to the nape of his neck after putting the "wig" on his head to ensure proper placement at the nape of his neck -- otherwise you may get the ponytail too high.  Hot glue keeps it nicely in place.

I used a pony tail holder to gather the ribbon and make it look more realistic.

The ties on the Durag can be hidden under the pony tail and tucked inside the child's shirt or jacket.

For the neck covering we used a large white flour sack towel I picked up in the kitchen section of the Dollar store.  We then used a handkerchief to position in the front for a more "George" style shirt.

Did you spot the $1.00 bill in George's pocket?  Pretty snazzy, huh?

Homemade Robot for Pre-Schooler

Share your creations on my T.G.I.F Linky Party -- we'd love to see your Spring, Summer, Easter, St. Paddy's, or "anything goes" creations.  -- Click here for that.
........

Today I wanted to show you this adorable robot we created for our pre-schooler Spencer.  It was a family project because it took mom, dad and Spencer to create this.  Each of us contributing a special "touch" in the creation process.  Dad is very "crafty" too -- more in the "building" aspect though.   I'm sooo lucky.

At his pre-school (and like many others) each week they bring a show and tell for the letter the class is working on for that week.  This past week was "R" -- so the teacher wanted each child to create a robot to share with the class and then be on display for the next week so everyone who passes by can see them too.  Here is our little guy Spencer proudly showing off the finished creation -- Rodetta.  :)  If you are new to my blog -- this is my little helper -- he LOVES to craft with me and sometimes you will hear/see him on my video's.

Here is what we did --
- body - box (it had little bags of chips in it), covered with red paper.

- legs - paper towel roll (cut in half, covered with patterned "star" paper), attach to bottom of box with hot glue.

- arms - another paper towel roll (cut in half, then the tube was slit so we could roll the arms a little smaller), attach to side of body with hot glue.

- head - chicken breast can (like tuna in a can but a larger one that had chicken breast in it.)
- adhere pattern paper around can and on top (which would actually be the bottom of the can upside down).

- hair - curly polka dot ribbon, adhered to top of can.

- red bows in her hair.

- eyes - black (1" scallop circle), white (1" circle), smaller black (3/4" circle).

- mouth - piece of red rick rack

- lace trim around the can (serves 2 purposes - to cover up the glue from adhering the can to the box and adds a nice touch to a "girl" robot.)

- extra stuff includes a blue gem and some robot patterned paper (blue 3" scalloped circle, robot paper cut 2" regular circle) -- adds a nice touch in the center.

- to help the robot stand on her legs I took a semi-thick piece of cardboard and covered the top with some blue paper.  We then hot glued the legs to the bottom to help her stand up.  To cover up the "glue" I just tied some more curly ribbon around the bottom of her legs.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a great day :)

School Picture Keepsake Ornaments - Video #137

This project is a 2010 project!  :)

Happy Saturday CJToo friends!

For those of you who stopped by my blog during the Jingle-Jangle blog hop last night  you've already seen this picture BUT I also have a video to share with you who are interested.  Sorry but I FINALLY got it uploaded to YouTube today and wanted to share it.  For some reason it appears that I was NOT supposed to get this video completed.  I filmed the entire video with my new HD Flip camera (that I got on Black Friday) and it was not zoomed in enough so my work space was tooooooo far away for you to see anything.  Geez....then YouTube wouldn't cooperate and it kept failing my upload.  (big sigh)
ÜÜÜ

Okay....finally....here is my video.

Since I had to do 2 posts to ensure I get my video uploaded you can leave a comment on this post also as well as one on yesterday's post (CLICK HERE).  I will give away 2 gift cards to Hobby Lobby.  Welcome new viewers and followers and THANK you my loyal viewers.  I appreciate you all sooooo much!

Hugs!
